(NAN) Brig. Gen. Henry Ayoola, the Commander, Special Task Force (STF) maintaining the peace in Plateau, has commended Sen Gyang Pwajok (PDP, Plateau North), on his efforts at restoring peace in the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the senator had initiated talks between Fulanis and the Beroms during which leaders of both communities resolved to end hostilities and embrace peace.
The situation had helped to significantly end months of attacks and killings, as well as cattle rustling in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Governments.
Ayoola, who reviewed the security situation in the area during an interview with NAN on Wednesday, described Pwajok’s intervention as “very timely and effective’’.
“I think the Fulanis have always felt neglected and Pwajok’s intervention was very gratifying to them.
“I also feel happy that the senator’s intervention was very open, while the discussions were indeed very frank, with all sides allowed to voice their concerns, fears and expectations.
“Such frank approach restored what has always been lacking – mutual confidence between the warring communities- and this is what we must continue to encourage and support.”
Ayoola urged political leaders across the state to organise such parleys to promote understanding and mutual trust as well as remove fears and suspicion among the people.
“When people meet and talk, a lot is achieved; some fears would be unfounded and some claims could just be from rumours.
“So, when people meet and pour out their hearts, a lot is achieved and we shall be looking for more of such peace initiatives,’’ the STF commander said. (NAN)
