Microsoft is looking for a new CEO.

Steve Ballmer who took over from Bill Gates in January 2000, says he will retire as CEO within  the next 12 months.

Ballmer says Microsoft has embarked on a new strategy and has an amazing senior leadership team.

He says the company needs a CEO for the long term, who will steer it in a new direction.

A special committee, chaired by Bill Gates and  Microsoft’s board, will be set up to select the new CEO.

Microsoft says both internal and external candidates will be considered.
