Malema calls for S Africa mass mine strikes

Firebrand South African political leader Julius Malema has called for a national strike in all of South Africa’s mines, as labour unrest in the country has escalated following the closure of two platinum and gold mines.

Malema’s comments came on Tuesday as the death toll in the month-long strike in Marikana rose to 45, after a man’s hacked body was found earlier that day at platinum mine owned by the Lonmin company.

Last month, police killed 34 striking miners during a demonstration centred on wage demands at the same mine, and the unrest led to thousands more laying down their tools at the nearby Gold Fields mine. Ten more people have since been killed in related violence.
