Ghana President, John Atta Mills Reportedly Dies

Reuters reports that a statement from Ghana President John Atta-Mills’ office confirms that the leader has passed away.

The statement read: “It is with a heavy heart…that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana.”

BBC Africa confirmed the announcement and reported that Atta Mills died in a hospital in Accra.

Atta Mills became president of Ghana in 2009 after losing twice. He previously served as vice president. According to the BBC, Atta Mills had been suffering from throat cancer.
